Many of my projects take a couple of minutes to load in Ableton. So I like to fire up Firefox and check email or something while waiting. Whenever I do this, Ableton ALWAYS crashes when loading a file. If I keep Ableton in the foreground, it NEVER crashes when loading a file. I run on a Mac G5 2.5GHz Dual, 6 GB memory, Mac OS X 10.4.9.

Ableton Crashing Whenever I Add Multiple Instances of Serum I have a project with quite a few instances of serum (They are all frozen) and whenever I go to add another midi channel and drag serum in, Ableton crashes. I have spoken with Steve Duda and he has informed me that the update that was released today (Aug 6, 2016 v.1.112) should resolve the issues people were having.
If you were using the Splice plan log into the desktop app and click the Plugins tab. It should show you that Serum has an update available. GO GO GO
I had just bought Serum via Splice through their new rent-to-own scheme. I was super pumped. I installed it and opened it up… but, that’s when the trouble began.
Every time I would start auditioning presets Serum would crash – taking down Ableton Live with it.
I tried letting the database build itself completely. I tried re-installing. I tried letting each preset load for a couple seconds.. that seemed to work a little, but the problem persisted. Plus, even if that method worked 100% of the time, talk about a workflow nightmare.
Luckily, the fix is simple enough.
On a Windows machine right click the Windows icon and select the Run command. Then copy this command line
%APPDATA%/xfer/
Paste that into the Open input of the Run window.
That will bring you to Serum’s appdata folder. There should be another folder and a .dat file. You want to erase the .dat file titled Serumpresetdb.dat. Apparently the file gets corrupted from time to time.
Don’t worry about it. Once you re-launch Serum let it rebuild the database completely. Once it’s done you should be able to use the synth without any issues or crashes.

If you are still getting crashes go back to %APPDATA%/xfer/ and delete everything in there. This will make Serum rebuild everything from the ground up. Some times the user.dat file is messing things up.

And, if that STILL doesn’t work for you it is almost certainly a corrupt preset pack. Remove all non-factory preset folders. Then, one by one, add the third party packs back until you get the crash again.

Playback of wavetables requires digital resampling to play different frequencies. Without considerable care and a whole lot of number crunching, this process will create audible artifacts. Artifacts mean that you are (perhaps unknowingly) crowding your mix with unwanted tones / frequencies. Many popular wavetable synthesizers are astonishingly bad at suppressing artifacts - even on a high-quality setting some create artifacts as high as -36 dB to -60 dB (level difference between fundamental on artifacts) which is well audible, and furthermore often dampening the highest wanted audible frequencies in the process, to try and suppress this unwanted sound. In Serum, the native-mode (default) playback of oscillators operates with an ultra high-precision resampling, yielding an astonishingly inaudible signal-to-noise (for instance, -150 dB on a sawtooth played at 1 Khz at 44100)! This requires a lot of calculations, so Serum’s oscillator playback has been aggressively optimized using SSE2 instructions to allow for this high-quality playback without taxing your CPU any more than the typical (decent quality) soft synth already does. Load up Serum and we think you’ll be able to notice both what you hear (solid high frequencies, extending flat all the way up to the limits of hearing) as well as what you don’t hear (no unwanted mud or aliasing gibberish- just good, clean sound).
